Health Education

Ball games and sports are not only healthy and fun. They bring young people together in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, providing an ideal context for health education.

Currently, Alive and Kicking balls carry warnings on the two main killer diseases in Africa, Malaria and HIV/AIDS.

Our balls are accompanied by a series of health awareness posters endorsed by African sports starts. In Kenya, these posters have been distributed to all 4,000 secondary schools. Together the balls and posters provide an ideal platform for teachers, peer educators and sports coaches to talk about preventive health education and give life saving advice.

Future plans include establishing Resource Centres alongside Rural Stitching Centres. In addition to providing information, the Resource Centres will be used to conduct workshops for Sports Teachers, Coaches and Peer Group Leaders to support dissemination skills and consolidate knowledge. The Resource Centre will include a playing area for organised sport and preventive health awareness activities.
