How did you start working at Alive & Kicking?
I have been working for Alive & Kicking since October 2006. One of my friends works for Alive & Kicking and he recommended the job.
What were you doing before?
I used to sell groceries in the slum.
Why did you change jobs and become a stitcher?
My old job was very demanding. The hours I used to work were too long and I had no free time. Working as a stitcher is much more rewarding in terms of pay and working hours and I have also gained a skill, something I didn't need for my last job.
How did you find learning to stitch balls?
In the beginning it was hard but because I had determination I was able to learn and improve.
How far do you travel to get to work? How do you get to and from the workshop?
I live in Kwa Ruben (a slum near the workshop). It's only a 30 minute walk each way.
How do you find the Alive & Kicking workshop?
I really like my co-workers. We chat as we work and they have some good stories.
FAMILY
How old are you?
I am 22.
Do you have a big family?
I have two brothers and a sister who is married and lives in Kibera slum.
How many people do you support on your income?
I am a single guy. But I support my parents. And I would like to get married, so I am saving to build a house first.
LIVING IN NAIROBI
Do you originally come from Nairobi? Where do you come from?
I originally come from Kisii (Nyanza provinice), 100km away.
How long have you lived in Nairobi? Why did you move?
There are just no job opportunities or money in rural areas. I moved to Nairobi in 2002 to stay with my Dad and find casual work. I saved up money to start my grocery business.
How do you like the city of Nairobi?
Nairobi is multicultural so I have gained experience and met different people.
If I had stayed at home, I would have had too much time on my hands and probably drifted into drug or alcohol abuse, as has happened to my friends that stayed behind.
How did you find the living conditions in the slums in Nairobi?
I didn't mind because at least I had work.
SPARE TIME
What do you do in your spare time?
I go to church and hang out with my friends.
Do you play any sports?
I play football and volleyball.
Do you watch international sports? Do you support any international teams? Who is your favourite sports personality?
I am a Chelsea supporter. They play well and win a lot!
My favourite player is Didier Drogba.
My favourite African World Cup team is Nigeria and my other favourite team is Brazil. I am a big fan of Ronaldhino.
THE UK
Can you name any famous British people?
Beckham. He is a rich guy who has made it. I admire players that use football as a way to get out of poverty.
