The stitchers

  • For 55% of our stitchers their job at Alive & Kicking is the first job they've had in formal employment
  • Working for Alive & Kicking has improved the standard of living of 87% of our staff
  • The average number of dependents supported on each stitcher's salary is 6, with some stitchers supporting over 10 people on their own

Alive & Kicking stitchers come from urban areas in Lusaka and Nairobi, where finding employment is extremely difficult. At Alive & Kicking over 150 adults are able to stitch their own way out of poverty, earning a fair wage in good working conditions.

Stitchers benefit from work place health and wellness advice sessions designed to encourage awareness about how to achieve and maintain good health, and to remove stigma about disease. Some stitchers have been trained as HIV peer educators, adding to their skill sets and allowing them to give key messages to children when balls are donated.
