Health Programme

At Alive & Kicking we believe that sport's mass appeal across Africa combined with its natural affinity with good health make it the perfect vehicle for conveying health advice to young people. In this pursuit Alive & Kicking prints every ball distributed to children with simple health messages, has created a set of HIV/AIDS posters and runs HIV/AIDS awareness roadshows that use sport's popularity to bring people together.

At Alive & Kicking we acknowledge that messages play a role in, but are not enough to change people's behaviour. Therefore we work with specialist health partners to combat social and economic drivers of disease. Alive & Kicking has partnered with Right To Play in Zambia and with Tackle Africa in Kenya who have trained some of our stitchers as HIV peer educators. This builds our stitchers' skill sets as well as allowing them to convey key messages to children when they distribute balls. All of our stitchers are involved in workplace health and wellness sessions.

Alive & Kicking Kenya carries out regular HIV/AIDS roadshows in rural parts of the country. The roadshow team is made up of management and stitchers trained as peer educators. They organise sports events based around raising awareness of HIV/AIDS. Our partner organisations are key in increasing understanding of HIV/AIDS through sport and drama.

Alive & Kicking's HIV/AIDS awareness posters feature simple advice aimed at Kenya's young people and endorsed by Kenyan sports personalities. These posters have been distributed to all 4000 government secondary schools in Kenya and a similar set of posters is currently being created by Alive & Kicking Zambia.
